Music To My Ears

I'd love to be able to play the piano. Everything looks so graceful and the melodies seem to just flow from the keys.

I've attempted to play several musical instruments over the years. The trombone (this one time at band camp...). The guitar (twice). The harmonica (I have no idea?). However, each time I tried to pick up an instrument to learn it, I failed.

Now that I am really into Christian music and how it influences my daily life, I often daydream about rocking out on stage as God speaks His Word through my lips, gives me a beat to tap my feet, and some skills to play something (anything) with my hands.

I'm guessing, now that my life keeps getting crazier, that my time to "pick-up" an instrument has passed. So I thought I would throw this question out there:

What, if any, instrument would you love to learn how to play and why? I'd love to hear your Rock Star fantasy (excluding the groupies)!

The guitar. Totally! I'm a songwriter and I "get" music. I understand melodies and transitions. But writing would be so much easier if I new how to play an instrument.

My daughter is a fantastic guitar player, singer and songwriter. Amazing in fact. I don't know if you've ever seen the video of her on my blog - so yes, I'm gonna totally brag on her and provide you a link here...sorry, if that is tacky - but i'm proud of her ;-)

What a good kiddo! She plays great and has a very mature singing voice for her age. Loved it!

Thanks! We're pretty proud of her!

She's tried giving me guitar lessons a couple times. She does great, I just get frustrated.

Why do you think it's too late to pick up an instrument? I don't think so.

I'm WAY too impatient. I'm one of those guys that if I don't catch a fish when I drop in the line...I'm done!

Sports always came naturally to me and I enjoyed success in that. I think that has carried over to other areas of my life.

I just can't give things that kind of time :)

No, no...its NEVER too late! I just learned guitar a couple of years ago! Now, I did take 4 years of piano lessons in high school and was in choir forever, so had music background. BUT, I picked up guitar pretty fast, and although I'm "terrible" from a world's view, I can certainly lead worship with the guitar. I'd LOVE to play the piano again though too...we'll get one in the next couple of years, hopefully. : ) I'm DEFINITELY getting Mylo into music and sports at an EARLY age to set a good foundation for whatever he chooses to do later on in life.

So check this out Ryan...

Today I get a call from one of our Electric Guitarists on Music team at church telling me he wants to give me free lessons. He teaches guitar on the side and usually has gaps of time between appt's and wanted to use that time teaching me to play!

Like Kate said...it's never too late! I'm all over it =)

LoL. Awesome Tam! I'll be looking for your YouTube performances soon :)

Kate, I think you are right...it definitely helps to have a musical background. Unfortunately, I do not have a musical bone in my body. Looks like I'll just be a "listener" of music!

I play Piano, and I've always dreamt of being a guitar player.

I don't think it is the rockstar thing as much as I love rock!

Can't rock too much with the piano :)

I'd definitely recommend guitar and piano. Those have been rewarding to me personally. they also offer a REALLY wide range of style, so you can play almost anything once you get decent at either of them.

I am still a novice on piano, but I'm working. I like to consider myself a little more than intermediate at guitar :-D
